Belgannan's Spell Research Planning

So I decided to start a thread to get ideas of what spells Belgannan could research that would be most beneficial for the Hazard Guard. (Let me know if I should put this in another Category)

Currently (Fourth Level) he can cast zero, first, and second level spells. Remember he is a conjurer and his opposition schools are enchantment and necromancy.

His current First Level Spells are as follows: Burning Hands, Color Spray, Comprehend Languages, Endure Elements, Expeditious Retreat, Gravity Bow, Grease, Identify, Mage Armor, Magic Missile, Reduce Person, Summon Monster I, Unseen Servant, Vanish, Snapdragon Fireworks, Mount, Floating Disk, Polypurpose Panancea

His Second Level Spells are: Glitterdust, Invisibility, Mirror Image, Protection From Arrows, Scorching Ray, Summon Monster II

2nd Level Spells Belgannan is to research in the future: Knock, Create Pit, Acid Arrow, Detect Thoughts, Fire Breath, See Invisibility

3rd Level Spells Belgannan will acquire when he gets there: Summon Monster III, Fireball, Haste

I am open to any other ideas or spells that you all would recommend (thus this thread)

I don't know that I would worry about flaming sphere. Shopal currently typically seems to have it memorized. Not sure how useful it is to have two of them out at the same time. Just my thoughts on that.

What about See Invis?

Added See Invisibilty to the research list

Isn't that why Belgannan wants to learn flaming sphere? So he and Shopal can continue to spar for dominance in the "male elf" category, this time with flaming balls? ;oP

Of course… I don't actually see flaming sphere on the list, just Firebreath and Fireball. Clearly, he wants to compete in a slightly different fire form.

With as much as Belgannan likes cold I'm a little surprised to see fire anything but I guess even arctic elves get cold sometimes.

Ahh but you see, Belgannan lost his resistance to cold by spending over 50 years in a monastery, Belgannan has a particular liking for hearth fires and fire in general.

The only real other fire spell I was thinking of originally getting was Fireball because as a player I have never had a character with Fireball and I have always wanted it.

I had added the Fire Breath spell in anticipation to fighting trolls.

The rolling ball of fire spell was a base spell in the original incarnation of Belgannan as a D&D 4th edition mage...Squibb can attest to his constant use of that spell during those adventures.

Belgannan has no intention of "Competing" with Shopal...the two of them have mended their fences. The only reason Belgannan ran ahead of the group with the werewolf was to help Shopal...

The Firebreath vs. Trolls research in the downtime also makes complete sense with the timing that I presented in the other thread… sounds very practical to bulk up fire potential when facing trolls.

Well Prepared Wizards are very powerful in Pathfinder =-)

Firebreath is nice as it is usable multiple rounds...granted less damage over time..but has more use than a one shot spell such as Scorching Ray...and as a whole does more damage. Only real issue is that it is a 15ft cone which Belgannan is used to with Burning Hands.

I am trying to focus more on battlefield control spells, more Grease...Glitterdust, etc...but still have the necessary spells for things with special resistances and swarms. I am considering eventually getting a wand of Burning Hands for Swarms specifically.

I would definitely suggest that or even getting wands of some of the other spells so that you don't have to keep them memorized.

I'll chime in on this when I have a moment. I'm at the end of my lunch break. You can't go wrong with tons of damage spells though. Then again the last wizard I played was focused on evocation, and used archmage class abilities to get 9x/day fireball as a spell-like ability. :-P

Cool, I am not a huge fan of the one shot spells...Firebreath is ok because I can use it three times per cast. If I am going to cast a spell I like something longer lasting that will make an effect on the encounter...thats why I like summoning...at 5th level I am going to be picking up Spell Focus (conjuration), which also helps with my DCs for conjuration spells so I can get Augmented Summoning eventually (and some other feats...I get a craft feat and a regular feat at 5...Craft Wonderous Items and Spell Focus (Conjuration)...Level 7 will be Qark's Upgrade....etc)
